Start with a private lesson
The first thing to do when buying a new gun is not to buy a gun yet. Take a private lesson with a certified instructor first. If your budget allows, rent a gun at the range for it. A private lesson gets you undivided one-on-one time to find what fits your hands, what carries well, and what makes sense at home, without a class full of other people burning the time you paid for.
Every range is different, so ask whether you can try a couple of guns during your lesson. Most people do not buy on the first day. They shoot, take time to process, sleep on it, come back for another lesson, and then buy. Everything changes once you start shooting for real.
Selecting a gun
Buy from a gun store, brand new from the factory with the factory warranty. You are buying reliability and support. Do not chase the expensive gun that just hit the market. You want a Toyota, not a Ferrari. Walk in with your top three picks and choose from there.
Established, reputable brands I recommend to new owners:
- Glock
- CZ
- Walther
- FN
- Canik
- Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 series
- Sig Sauer (P365 series)
Size and role
One gun does not do everything. If it is for home, a larger pistol is easier to shoot and manage. If you want to carry, you may need something more compact so it does not print through clothing. Most people end up owning a few over time: a carry pistol, a bigger handgun that stays home, and a long gun.
Caliber
For most first-time buyers, 9mm is the practical answer. It balances recoil, performance, and cost. Very small pistols can be less forgiving to run, so choose the largest pistol you will actually carry or stage. And do not overlook a .22LR. If the noise and recoil intimidate you, it is a great gateway, and you can work up to 9mm later.
After you buy
Shooting is a perishable skill, so sign up for more classes right away. Do not bolt on aftermarket parts yet. Put at least a thousand rounds through it in training first. Learn the gun, confirm reliability, then tune if needed.
The process feels daunting when no one is guiding you. Follow these steps and you will make a smart choice.
